Orienteering

Deer Lake Outdoor Center is excited to partner with the Western Connecticut Orienteering Club to bring orienteering adventures and events to Deer Lake.

Maps are available at the kiosk by the front parking lot.

You’ll use a map to navigate to the controls (checkpoints) marked on it.

In the terrain, the controls are marked with orange and white signs. The courses are designed for beginners, and all controls are along or right off the trails. The start / finish is at the kiosk by the front parking lot.

*If you are standing by a checkpoint in the woods and you want to locate where you are on the map – look at the ”All controls map” and find the circle with a code that matches the one on the checkpoint sign.

Explore the Outdoors in a New Way

Orienteering combines hiking, navigation, exploration, and problem-solving into one outdoor experience. Using a detailed map and compass, participants navigate to a series of checkpoints while exploring the forests, trails, and hidden corners of Deer Lake.

Choose your own route as you travel through the property. Stay on the trails or venture off the beaten path to discover scenic overlooks, unique terrain features, wildlife habitats, and places you may have never noticed before.

A Fun and Challenging Sport

For those looking for a challenge, orienteering is also a competitive sport. Participants race the clock while making quick navigation decisions along the way. It’s an activity that exercises both mind and body while encouraging outdoor adventure and exploration.

Great for All Ages and Skill Levels

Whether you’re an experienced navigator, casual hiker, family with children, scout group, or first-time participant, orienteering offers something for everyone. Courses can be enjoyed at your own pace, making it an accessible and rewarding activity for all ages.

Stay tuned for upcoming details, beginner programs, special events, and future orienteering opportunities at Deer Lake Outdoor Center.
